Prevention
The first point of prevention is in the home. With this in mind, PAD offers parent-focused, up-to-date information to increase awareness of tobacco, alcohol and other drug use. PAD helps parents prepare for the challenges their children face every day.
PAD's programs are designed to prevent substance abuse among teens by giving parents ways to talk to their children about drugs and to identify problems before they become serious. These resources help strengthen family bonds, improve parenting skills and reinforce family interactions from the early years through adolescence. Parent resources answer questions like "When do I start talking to my child about drugs?" and discuss sensitive subjects such as cultural conflicts and peer pressure. They provide practical advice for parents who ask, "What can I do?"
Education
PAD develops exciting, interactive school-based programming aimed directly at youth.
PAD has been a leader in implementing innovative, peer-led programs that involve older teens helping younger teens and providing information to lower the risks associated with teenage partying. PAD works with other organizations to provide curriculum support to help teachers deliver current, relevant classroom activities in health and physical education and social sciences. And PAD's comprehensive workshops and training opportunities benefit teachers, health professionals and other front-line community workers.
Support
For parents who have concerns about a son or daughter's use of drugs, PAD offers strategies for communicating and problem-solving specific to their needs. PAD's confidential telephone support service provides confidential information and referrals to support parents in their efforts to work through the process of understanding the problems and identifying the solutions.
