The Process of Creating a New Resource
Parent Action on Drugs would like to acknowledge the assistance provided by the LCBO in producing this resource in English and French and promoting alcohol education and awareness in Ontario.
Last year, the LCBO approached PAD to discuss if there was something that we - in our work with parents, youth and communities - identified as a gap in alcohol education. The ability of the LCBO to support the resource design, translate the materials into French, print large quantities of the brochure and assist in the distribution was a tremendous asset and we responded with enthusiasm to their offer.
So began the process of developing the resource. First, we at PAD looked at narrowing the target audience. We know that many youth in Ontario drink alcohol, some frequently, and many drink in large enough quantities to qualify as “binge drinking”. And we know that many youth don’t drink at all or drink very little, and very rarely. Our audience of interest was those who choose to drink and their friends, although we hope the information and presentation is of interest to all teens – and to their parents and teachers and health promoters who support them. We know that the majority of high school students who drink are in grades 11 and 12, and have some experience with and knowledge of alcohol and its effects. We wanted a friendly, non-authoritarian tone, to invite the reader to the brochure and let them make their own way through it. And we wanted it to be evidence-based – on facts that are meant to inform, not scare.
We had two really terrific guides in the development of the resource: Anna Humphrey, Writer & Editor for Youth and Family www.annahumphrey.com and designer Dejana Erich www.erichdesign.com helped us put together a resource that is compelling in both language and format.
And of course we checked it all out with youth. Thanks to a great group of diverse, older students from Central Commerce Collegiate in Toronto we got an honest appraisal of the information and format and were able to make the changes they recommended. When they made comments like “I would share this with others” and “It feels non-judgemental, it doesn’t make us feel guilty”, we knew we were on the right track.
Also available in French.

TAKING CHARGE: Young Women, Alcohol, and Sexual Assault
|
|
Parent Action on Drugs talked to over 200 young women about sexual assault and alcohol. Whether they had been sexually assaulted or not, most girls said they would not come forward because…
- They would feel ashamed and humiliated.
- They would feel that they let it happen.
- If they had said yes at any time, then the guy would not be responsible.
- Friends would cut them out.
- There could be reprisals from the boy.
- They would never be forgiven by their parents.
Based on the information from young women and professionals, this tool kit was developed for health professionals to support and inform young women. Available in English and French, the Tool Kit fits into a variety of settings and curriculum programs and contains four parts:
1. A Guide to the Taking Charge project in 4 sections:
- The Taking Charge Project: Rationale, Process, Key Findings and Frequently Asked Questions
- Responding to Disclosure
- Educational Activities
- Supporting Parental Involvement (parent information brochure included)
2. A CD of handouts and resources.
3. A poster to encourage young women to think about the subject and talk about it with peers and adults they trust.
4. Keychains with the logo to hang on backpacks, keys, or cell phones.

ACTING RESPONSIBLY

§ Acting Responsibly A Supplementary Unit for Dramatic Arts with a focus on alcohol and other drug use and peer leadership
Parent Action on Drugs and Trinity Theatre worked together to apply our shared experiences with and commitment to peer leadership. Together we developed and tested a peer-based dramatic arts program that would create safer communities, increase responsible and respectful social interactions and decrease the problems caused by alcohol and other drug use among youth.
This supplementary unit was designed to support the Grades 10, 11 and 12 Dramatic Arts course profiles.
“[This experience] was a huge eye opener for many of us… we all realized how serious our actions are when we make a choice to drink or do drugs”
Nicole A.; drama student, Turner Fenton S.S.
“I liked the guide. I think the Acting Responsibly document supports a number of different ways of approaching this topic… I’m very excited to work with this program again. At this drama level the students are mature enough and the distance to Grade 9 is sufficient to make an impact.”
Roberta Belfry, Dramatic Arts teacher, George S. Henry Academy

The reality video of a grad party (PAD/ODAP)
In June 2000, a young filmmaker witnessed an incident
of alcohol poisoning at his "after-grad" party. The video replicates
the event as well as the confusion around how to respond appropriately.
The video and guide have been produced to help youth, and the people
who work with them, develop safety strategies to reduce their risks.
The guide will support the teacher/facilitator in examining some
key issues and lead youth in coming up with "safer partying" plans.
